iPhone OS 3.0 so far…

OS3Well, like millions of others yesterday, I meandered my way through my iPhone upgrade to OS 3.0.  I use the word meander because at launch the servers were extremely bogged down.  No worries, a little patience and clicking update, clicking yes I really want to update, watching bar progress of backup, watching contacting activation server bar, pop up activation server temporarily unavailable, clicking OK, starting the process over about 20X got me my spiffy new 3.0.  So what’s cool about it?

First of all SEARCH FUNCTIONALITY! Besides all the wrangle about iPhone not being enterprise friendly (deployment, background services, blah, blah, blah) the piece that has been missing since the launch of the iPhone is being able to search and especially email.  As one who relies on email for info, I keep about a months worth of emails on my phone, which for me averages to around 600 emails in my phone inbox.  Without search, that was a lot of scrolling.  So, email search finctionality, top new feature for me in 3.0.  Not to mention, you can actually search your whole phone, which is “pretty OK too”, to quote Mr Miagi.

The other new feature, that isn’t really a feature, just a refinement, is the seeming speed increase.  There doesn’t seem to be the lag in switching between screens and typing letters that there used to be.  Very nice!

What I am awaiting is the new “push notification” to catch on.  What I would especially love to see is an RSS reader with badges.  That would be cool.

Anyway, just a few thoughts, as I have delved into the world of iPhone OS 3.0.
